PICOBELLO - PIloting COllaborative ways to BEtter Living LOcally
In 2020, the President of the European Commission initiated the New European Bauhaus (NEB) to connect the European Green Deal with living spaces and experiences, aiming for a sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful environment. This creative and interdisciplinary movement invites actors from different sectors (science, technology, art, culture, architecture, design) to come together and jointly solve complex social problems. However, integrating NEB principles into local and regional policies remains a new concept and unclear for policymakers. The PICOBELLO project aims to assist governments in embedding NEB values into policy instruments, promoting long-term, integrated thinking in industrial ecosystems. NEB focuses on local actions to transform both surroundings and individuals, through the process of cooperation and tightening of relations. The NEB initiative advocates for a design process, combining systemic and social design, adapts to evolving socio-economic challenges.

The PICOBELLO project aims to improve regional development policy instruments in partner regions through co-creative knowledge exchange process on how European regions are implementing the three complementary values of the New European Bauhaus in their development strategies:
- Sustainability – foster climate goals, circularity, zero pollution, and biodiversity.
- Aesthetics – increase the quality of experience and style beyond functionality.
- Inclusion – promote valuing diversity, accessibility and affordability.
Through broad public engagement, co-creation, multistakeholder collaboration, marrying sustainability with comfort and attractiveness; the project aims to bring about the green change to the partners’ regions, to improve citizens’ lives by encouraging Europeans to take up sustainable solutions.
The main scope of PICOBELLO is to develop good practices and guidance regarding the application of the New European Bauhaus in partners’ regions and define the impact of NEB in these regions. To achieve that the project aims to:
- Map opportunities for NEB in the partners’ regional policies
- Map approaches to bringing together citizens with sustainability and aesthetics
- Define policy actions & potential pilot actions based on regional citizen engagement.
